Getting Heard

This lesson is all about getting heard! What does that mean? In your online class you will have opportunities to work together with your classmates in different ways; Discussion Boards, Wikis, Blogs, Voice Discussions, etc. If you don't know what these are, don't worry! Mrs. H is here to explain it all.

Collaborative Assignments

Collaboration image What does it mean to "collaborate?" This is just a fancy term that means working together with other students in your class to produce or create something. In your online class, collaborative assignments come in several forms. The most common are Discussion Boards, Wikis, Blogs, and Voice Discussions.

You'll have two roles to play when participating in collaborative assignments. You'll be a creator when you add your own work, and you'll also get to be a reviewer when you read or listen and respond to what your classmates have created. Sounds pretty cool, right?

Let's see what Mrs. H has to say about these types activities:

Discussion Boards

Discussion boards are one type of activity where you can collaborate with your class. They're similar to having a face-to-face discussion with your classmates except you don't get to use body language to help you. Because of this, it's important to remember to be direct and respectful so that your words don't get taken the wrong way. You are encouraged to ask questions in a discussion board. This can sometimes be easier than asking them in front of everyone!

Mrs. H is here to help you get into a discussion board and know what to do once you're there.

Wikis

Wikis are another collaborative activity that you'll find in your online class. The cool thing about wikis is that they allow the whole class to work together on one class page. It's fun to watch what each person brings to the activity and see it turn into a completed whole class creation.

Let's see how this is done. Mrs. H, take it away!

Blogs

You may have heard about blogs before, but do you know what a blogger does? Basically, a blogger keeps a journal of information online that they share with other people. Online classes sometimes have blogs where the whole class can add pages to it and create a class collection of information about a topic that is being studied.

Mrs. H is here to help you figure out how to participate in a class blog. Let's watch!

Adding Voice to an Assignment

Sometimes your teacher might want to know what you think, but out loud. In this case, you will need to add your voice to your assignment by making a recording and submitting it online. This can be both an individual and a discussion type assignment. For discussions, you will also get to hear what your classmates have to say - just as if you were in a classroom together!

Mrs. H is here once again to tell you how it's done!
